When choosing a private duty home care agency, consider these factors:

  • How long has the agency been in business?
  • What is the agency’s screening process: Does it include reference checks, criminal history, and drug screening?
  • Does the agency actually employ the caregiver? Some agencies may be placement services, which make the client the employer and therefore liable for employment taxes and other responsibilities.
  • Reputation for quality and services. Ask for references.
  • Does it have a Director of Nursing/Registered Nurse on staff?
  • Is there an evaluation charge/or charge for RN supervisory visits? Clients should not pay for an evaluation.
  • Does the agency charge mileage? Some actually do to increase revenue for the caregivers. The agencies pay the caregivers minimum wage or slightly above, then add the mileage (paid by the client) to “increase” their pay.
  • Is the agency licensed with the state, bonded, and insured?
  • Can the agency produce this paperwork for the client?
  • Is the agency a member of the Better Business Bureau or the local Chamber of Commerce? State Home Care Association? All of these types of memberships show a commitment to outstanding service in their community.

Dear Jo,
I wanted you to know how much I enjoyed seeing Andrea when she comes to give my meds and take my blood pressure. She's so sweet, caring and easy to be around. She a winner!
